Brief History:
The South Bend Northern is an interurban that runs from St. Joseph, MI to Indianapolis, IN. The first run was on June 25th, 1901, when the railroad was known as the St. Joseph, South Bend & Elkhart Electric Railway (SS&E). During 1913, in a merger with Winona Lines, the railroad was rebranded to South Bend & Northern Indiana (SB&NI). In 1937, the Missouri Pacific Lines (MoPac) bought the railroad via a subsidiary company, named South Bend Northern. Since then, SBN has continued to operate (relatively) high speed electric passenger service, but has mostly dieselized its freight operations as early as the 50s.

Noteworthy facts:

(Unless stated otherwise, '## is referring to 19##)

1 - In '82, as the old CSS style pullman MUs were being replaced, SBN had set aside 16 of them — enough for two 8 car trains — for a "heritage fleet", which operates on the weekends and acts as a sort of rolling museum of the railroad.

2 - SBN's "heritage fleet" uses a separate reporting mark — "SBNX" — to easily distinguish between the heritage fleet and regular MU cars.

3 - In '84, SBN purchased two SDP40Fs from Amtrak to act as both extra road power and MoW units. These both were rebuilt into SD40FHs in '90. During this rebuild, 751 recieved a pantograph for icebreaking.

4 - In June of '74, SBN purchased two of the Milwaukee Road's EP-4 "Little Joe" locomotives, these two were renumbered to 320 and 321.

5 - Rather humerously, the 320 and 321 had been renumbered simply by flipping the E of E20 and E21 upside down. This was fixed rather early on, though.

6 - SBN's shop crews seem to really dislike the idea of having actual ditchlights on their road power, even going as far as to simply hook up the marker lights to function as ditchlights for crossings. This quite comical avoidance of ditchlights is seen as a "historical preservation" move from the FRA, and thus is allowed for units that didn't arrive on SBN with ditchlights.

7 - A small handful of SBN's most noteworthy units have been preserved, such as #3 (The only short car to recieve the 50s livery), #11 (A short car restored into its pre-40s livery), #35 (The first of SBN's lengthened pullmans, which recieved an extremely early version of the "Modernization Livery"), #150 (One of SBN's original Overhead Line Cars), and #1011 (The only surviving SBN steeplecab), which all reside at the East Troy Electric Railroad. It should be noted too that there's a handful of more standard SBN units which are also preserved.

8 - Along with the above, #301 and #302 (SBN's only two MoPac style EMC AA units) can sometimes be seen operating at the Illinois Railway Museum.

9 - There are only two pre-SBN era cars that exist nowadays, #22 — A '20s Cincinnati Car Co. built Interurban MU — and #605 — A '10s 60ton Electric Boxcab — which are both owned by a private owner, and are on display at SBN's Notre Dame/St. Mary's station.

10 - The MR-90 EMUs are all ex-Agence Métropolitaine de Transport (AMT), and SBN had started operating them on September 1st, 2022. They were all given PTC prior, but currently operate in a patch livery.

11 - (out of universe) SBN's 5th Anniversary was on August 4th, 2023.
