Brief History:
Canadian-Alaskan Railroad, better known as "The Card", is a roughly 1306 mile long railroad operating between Palmer, AK, US and Kitwanga, BC, CA. It was founded by Canadian National with the hopes of creating rail connection to Alaska with the rest of North America. Construction started in the late 40s, but didn't finish until the late 70s. It currently operates primarily as an interchange railroad between BC Rail (Canadian National) and the Alaska Railroad.

Noteworthy facts:

1 - There's a Tehachapi style loop near Glacier View, AK, named "Shephard's Loop"

2 - There are various instances of street running, most notably at Glennallen, AK and Beaver Creek, BC

3 - The route was originally built with electrification in mind, and some segments actually received it (in particular the mountainous regions it runs through in AK), but full route electrification had not been achieved until the late 90s.

4 - There have been several eras where CARD operates on what trackage they had finished prior to completion of the mainline. Most notably, Kitwanga, BC to Whitehorse, YT, when a foods, goods, and mail transfer service with the White Pass & Yukon had been established in the early 70s.

5 - In the late 50s, CARD had gone nearly bankrupt from construction costs, as the engineers behind the route hadn't accounted for inflation nearly enough. This lead to a brief period where CARD had leased units from ARR, and began running tourist trains along the portion of the route that had been completed. These tourist trains still operate to this day, albeit using their own rolling stock and power, along with running the entire route instead of just between Palmer and Glenallen.
